What is a PRP Treatment?

Platelet-rich Plasma or PRP treatment has been known over the years for its effectiveness in treating various injuries and speeding up healing processes.

How does PRP treatment work?

Platelet-rich Plasma is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood. As a concentrated source of blood plasma, it contains several growth factors and other cytokines, thereby promoting healing when injected.

Platelets are the first cell type that arrives at the site of tissues injury and is particularly active in the early inflammatory phase of the healing process. They play a role in clot formation and release of substances that promote tissues repair.

How long do the results last?

PRP is natural, safe, and very well-tolerated with no risk of immune or disease transmission because the platelets come from your own blood; so you don’t have to worry. Treatment with PRP holds some promise by giving a long lasting permanent solution that won’t wear off over time as with a traditional injection. PRP may be an option for enhanced healing, functional, and permanent recovery.

How is PRP treatment done?

Obtaining PRP is simple, fast and convenient. A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient, just like the routine blood test. The drawn blood is then placed into a centrifuge. A centrifuge is a machine that spins blood at high speed to separate the blood into red blood cells and concentrated platelets.

Once the blood is separated, the red blood cells are discarded, left with concentrated platelet-rich plasma. The PRP obtained can then be injected back into the damaged tendon, muscles, joint or disc.

PRP, when injected, has been found to be useful and effective in many areas for healing, these include treatment of hair loss, tendon injuries, acute injuries, post-surgical repair, and osteoarthritis. Injecting PRP into damaged tissues stimulate the body to grow new healthy cells, thereby promoting healing.
